To escape her persistent suitors, Countess Mariza flees to her estate in Hungary and becomes engaged to the fictional Baron Zsupán. When the fictitious suitor suddenly appears in very real terms and gleefully tries to whisk his beloved away to Varaždin, the lighthearted and emotional chaos begins. An impoverished, mysterious estate manager, also in love with the Countess, then finally throws the tranquil Hungarian country life into complete disarray.

To this hilarious and deeply moving story is added Kálmáns fabulous music, a veritable firework display of fast-paced csárdás, unforgettable evergreens, and catchy hits – in short, a true operetta classic in red, white, and green.
