Julian Rachlin, conductor and violin
Julian Rachlin, the outstanding violinist since early childhood, has long since earned an excellent international reputation as a conductor as well. In his next performance at his home in Vienna's Musikverein, he combines these two musical passions – violin playing and conducting – in a performance with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's famous and beloved Violin Concerto, Op. 64, opens this program, which Rachlin then concludes with Mendelssohn as well – with a foray into Scottish territory, set to music in the Third Symphony, the “Scottish.“ Within this Mendelssohnian framework, Julian Rachlin places the two “Old Viennese Dances,“ “Liebesfreud“ and “Liebesleid“ – two character pieces by Fritz Kreisler. With this, he pays homage to his great colleague from earlier times, whose 150th birthday was commemorated last year.
