Winterfest 2025 – Michael Zandl: FOOD

The Toihaus Theater Salzburg was founded in 1984 by the independent group 'Löwenzahn-Verein für Theaterräume' in a time of cultural and social awakening in Salzburg.
Salzburg is the capital of the eponymous country of the Republic of Austria. With 153,377 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2018), it is the fourth largest city in Austria after Vienna, Graz and Linz. Characteristic for the city, which lies in the Salzburg basin, are the city mountains and the Salzach, which flows through the city center. The northwest of the Statutory City of Salzburg is adjacent to Freilassing in Germany (Free State of Bavaria, district of Berchtesgadener Land), the rest of the city to the district of Salzburg-Umgebung, commonly called Flachgau.
In 488, the decline of the Roman city of Iuvavum began in the same place. Salzburg was founded in 696 as a bishopric and 798 the seat of the archbishop. The main sources of income in Salzburg were salt mining and trading and, at times, gold mining. The fortress Hohensalzburg comes in the core of the 11th century. It is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe and a landmark of the city. From the 17th century, the city was magnificently equipped by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich and his successors as a royal residence. At this time in the south of the city and the Hellbrunn Palace including castle park, water features and avenues was built. Salzburg's best-known composer is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born here in 1756, which is why the city is nicknamed "Mozartstadt" and the airport is named Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart. The historic center of the city has been on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1996.
Today Salzburg is an important trade fair and congress location with many trade and service companies as well as an efficient tourism sector. In addition, the city is internationally significant by the Salzburg Festival, which earned her the other nickname "Festival City". Due to its convenient location, the city of Salzburg forms the core of the transnational EuRegio Salzburg - Berchtesgadener Land - Traunstein. In addition, it is the traffic junction for one of the most important west-east and transalpine road and rail routes in Europe (Munich - Vienna - Budapest, Salzburg - Villach - Udine).
